What to use on sloped path to prevent erosion in rain?

Path from cottage to parking lot slopes at about a 4/1 pitch, so over 40 feet it drops about 10 feet. We've used gravel or stone dust over drainage rock but still have it wash away during heavy rain. Any other suggestions? We want to keep it natural looking.

That is a tough one. Without making it into "steps" and creating drainage on both sides of the path for the rain; I am not sure.

You could use railway ties and make steps.

Basically, the water has to go somewhere. You will have to find another path for the water to take; and make the slope less "slope".

    Here is a good article:

Try using larger rocks, that can't be easily washed away.

Perhaps you could put down some cement and lay you stone or gravel over it? My parents had a cement patio laid and then they put stones on it that were partially sunk in. I'm not sure exactly when they put it in, perhaps late 50's to very early 60's. When they moved into a new home they had built in 73 it was still in really good shape.

You can also have a natural fall and break your neck! Dig out some steps, build a foundation or framework, and get some stairs on that immediately. At the least, put paving sones or bricks on those dug out steps and add a guardrail. Humans are not built for that steep a pitch. Please take care! Best wishes đŸ˜‡

You probably need to terrace your path to prevent those washouts, RG.

Better by far to have few gradual steps over the length.

The only thing that can hold a slope and prevent erosion is ground cover, scrubs, grasses... their roots stablize the slope. Look around where you live and see what grows on the slopes with no erosion.... and thats your best cover.

Tiered steps would be the best way to prevent erosion.

Thanks for all of the input. Agree that terraced steps may be the best solution. Will have to include wagon wheel wedges to allow for transporting stuff between parking lot and cottage.
