You could do either, so long as you do not spoil the integreity of the Rocker.........
You can find a local caner and have them redo the caning or you can take out all the caning and replace the seat with a new cushion. Webbing can easily be redone.
in order to retain the antique character of the chair, I would replace the webbing, especially if it is a family heirloom.
Oh, I'm all about the foam and upholstery! I'm 68 and I remember MANY rocking chairs and straight chairs with plywood or an old shelf with an old cushion, or foam or cotton batting and fabric nailed down to hold it together. So if you enjoy the Depression-Old Timey Country style, I would probably applaud you. If you want refurbished nice looking keepsakes, go with a pro or learn to do a professional job. You can do it. Best nostalgic wishes 😇
Thank you, Susan, for your answer. It isn't a family heirloom, so I'd simply want to fix it so it looks good with the least amount of work.
Honestly, if this rocker means something to you, I'd get a real caner to fix it. If it's just for a conversation starter, I might do the old time DIY fix. The foam is sure softer. And it should be done with items around the house. No brand new fabric or wood. The seat should use sawed out squares to make it fit around the chair frame. Think : Ma and Pa Kettle try DIY. HAVE A SMILE ON ME. 😇
It's a pleasure...........
