I used the hammer-edge border from Amazon. Here's the product info: Dalen Products E3-16B Gardeneer Edge Pound-In Garden and Landscape Edging. You hammer these into the ground (preferably after a hard rain). These are incredibly strong.

I've been trying to dig it out and have found roots 12 inches underground, not even Round-up kills it down to the roots. That being said, if you are vigilant you can keep it under some kind of control. Do try a deeply dug metal edge like Susan suggested

I like metal edging. It holds up well and is long lasting.
