How to separate my succulents? Help!

I've had these succulents for about 9 months. I plucked a tiny one out of the pot on the right in the picture and it's doing ok. I just need to know how to separate them without killing them. Any advice would be welcomed! I don't want to kill them. Also, does anyone know the name for them? Thanks!

  • Names I can't help you with. Make sure you have the proper soil and remove from current pot and gently separate and place in new pot with fresh soil for each and then water a tiny bit . Thats it - nothing to it. Here is a link.

I have one like yours on the left. Don't have a name, but I know it blooms. Sort of a yellow orchid like flower. Mine is very pot bound which, I think is why it bloomed.

The one on the left I believe is Aloe. Break a small piece off to see if the inside is a clear slimy goo. If so, it's aloe. Not sure about the one on the right.

To separate, remove from the pot and run cool water over the roots to clear the dirt away. Then carefully smi shimmy the roots apart with your fingers. Only the tiny ones will break and that's ok. Repot in cacti/succulent material.

Aloe on the left and maybe a Mother-in-law tongue on the right

They are both succulents, Aloe and the one on the right I do not know the name maybe another type of Aloe...I recently repotted my two Snake plants and went to my garden center and they recommended a cactus soil for succulents rather than just basic potting soil....they must be kept on the dry side and do not overwater them, assuming that is true for your succulents as well.. both plants are doing well and I see a new shoot coming up in the smaller pot..so this type of soil seems to work very well ....

You need to remove them from the pots, then carefully separate individual plants (together with their roots) without breaking the roots. When you repot, do not water immediately if any of the roots had been broken - otherwise they will get root rot. Wait a week instead.
