Make Your Own Decorative Plates

I love the decorative plates that places like West Elm and Anthropologie carry, but I don't love the price tag. I also don't love the thought of so many other people having the same thing. One of my favorite things about DIY is making a truly unique item for your home. Making your own decorative plates is also environmentally friendly because you are using items that might otherwise go to a landfill. Double score!
Pick out your plates.
Pick out plates from the thrift store. Look for plates with interesting designs and plenty of white space.
Print your images on decal paper.
Find images to use for your plates. I used graphics from Creative Market, plus made a few of mine. Print these on decal paper. If you use an inkjet printer, each page will need to sprayed with a clear coat of spray paint to seal the ink.
Cut each image out.
Cut out each image with a little bit of space around it.
Soak in water.
Soak each image in a shallow basin of warm water until the paper backing starts peeling off of the decal. For larger images, don't peel off the backing until applying to the plate.
Apply decal.
Place the decal on the paper and smooth it out to remove excess water.
Hang and enjoy!

These are beautiful! I do decoupage which in a way is another way of achieving a similar effect! But you can do much more with a frondy effect your way than with decoupage which has to be hand cut. But can you wash your plates since the image goes on the top, where with decoupage it goes on the back? I like these very much!
