Above a new cooktop, I need 1/4" or greater flame retardant millboard covered with .015" or greater stainless steel (I have the stainless steel panel), to protect the underside of my kitchen cabinet which is between 24" and the required 30" above the cooktop.

      Naomie,

I am in the same predicament with a Wolf range. Have you found a source for flame retardant millboard?

My research has led me to "Transite" which is a high density non-asbestos board. (It was once made with asbestos.) I found a source for 4' x 8" x 1/4" sheets of Transite, but they do not cut it to size. Transite has the consistency of concrete and cutting requires the use of a diamond blade.

Perhaps concrete backer board for wet locations in bathrooms? About 1/2 inch thick. Heat resistant, since it is concrete. Cut it to size with carbide blade in circular saw. Durarock is one brand name.

I looked at this type of product and it says it will not burn but it will transfer the heat through to the cabinet.

Find a place (outlet store) that buys kitchen equipment when restaurants go out of business. Everything is usually in pretty good to the sometime gem of almost brand new but always priced at a really great price. I found everything I needed for my outdoor kitchen (stainless steel) won't rust, easy to clean and don't think I could have gotten any of it in the great shape it was in at the price it was.

Good suggestion. There is a used restaurant equipment company in the area.
