What do you want to know about comforters?

What is the fabric? What does the tag say? Some are machine washable some are dry clean only.

Big washing machine on medium to gentle cycle unless it is a down comforter. Pretreat any spots. It should have cleaning instructions on the label.

Ben_tell, if your comforter is torn at the seams, you can put it back together using the blind hem stitch. If it is torn on the fabric you will need to patch it, You can use a like material and put fusible web on the back. Iron the fabric (& web) onto your comforter and use a blanket stitch to sew it on. Be sure to sew it on well since the fusible web will let go the first time you wash it.

Now, on to cleaning! Are there stains you need to remove? If your comforter is machine washable, you can treat the stains according to their kind. (Always testing new cleaners in a small inconspicuous spot first) I like to wash Comforters and quilts in machines without an agitator, There is less chance of tearing the fabric that way. If you don't have one, go to your local laundrymat. Washing is fairly cheap and you can bring it home to dry.

Obviously if it DryClean only you should take it to the Dry Cleaners

If machine washable and your machine is not big enough, you can take it to a launderette where you can find bigger machines.

If you hand wash, fill the tub with either Woolite or baby shampoo and water. Let the comforter soak for about an hour. Rinse well and wring out until the comforter no longer drips. Either line dry or lay flat on another comforter or towels to dry. Comforters smell great if they are allowed to dry outside.
