Wash it down with TSP to dull the finish to accept the new paint.

OK thank you I've read that people clean some furniture with it and I looked at it at Home Depot and it seems to be really toxic and I'm just wondering if it's as bad as they make it out to be because I was kind of scared to use it when I read the directions

Remove any chalk dust and thoroughly clean the surface witha soft cloth moistened with warm soapy water. Then repair any cracks or gouges with a wood or plastic filler. Sand with a fine- to medium-grit sandpaper in order to help the new paint to adhere. Clean well to get all of dust off and walla... ready to paint again!!

There are 2 types of TSP. One is less toxic than the other but, in my opinion, works as well.

If you've already waxed the item, you should remove the wax using mineral spirits before applying new paint.
