(2) 8 x 10 rugs, one to by sectional in living area and the other under dining table. As you enter the area (both rooms) you will see both rugs.
I've found 2 I like but not sure if I should take the chance of the rugs "clashing".
Please offer your advice.
Thanks Much!

This is just my opinion but if they are in 2 separate rooms, then yes you can have 2 different rugs.

They don't need to be exactly the same but definitely from the same color class or style.

I have the same situation and I have two different rugs. The do have the same main color in them but they are not the same.

I actually found some links that discuss this very topic, importance is in that the rugs are a similar type and in the same color family, that seems to make them work:

I think that is a matter of your own personal decorating. If you like it that is all that matters

They should be the same pattern or at least the same colors. If one is a pattern, the other could be a single color that is found in the first one.

I agree with Chas, but even in the same room, sometimes if the colors complement each other you can use two different rugs in my very humble opinion. Good luck!

Make the rugs to the dƩcor in each room. Even though they can both be seen from the door, they do not have to match. Keep them in the same family of color and accent with them

Do you think they Clash? Are they the same colours? Personally, If my room interconnected and could be seen on entrance, I would make them the same design, But if you like them both, that means you could change them around from time to time and get a different look.

      Thank you John,

Your suggestion makes sense. Yes, they are both the color family - one is color blocks the other circles/swirls (both modern). Made by the same Company.

By all means, you can (and SHOULD) have two different rugs! In fact, that's the way decorators deal with this situation, however, you do need to have them sharing the same basic color scheme. The patterns are not that important (**) but the colors are. If the living room rug has blues and greens then the dining room rug should follow likewise.

** Re the subject of pattern not being that important .... the patterns don't have to match exactly BUT they shouldn't be that different. In other words, don't have a South-West style in the dining room and a middle-Eastern paisley-type pattern in the living room. I have two different rugs in my home (both in beiges and tones of brown) and their patterns are very, very different but they look stunning side by side - they are in two different areas but only about 3' apart. One is a vine pattern and one is a modern-looking floral so the patterns are different but entirely tie in with each other. I hope this helps.

I have this situation and have 2 different ones. Granted, when you come in the door, you can only see one as the other one is mostly hidden by a love seat. They are different but complimentary.

As long as there's something that links the two, you'll be fine. I personally don't like matchy-matchy stuff - but I do have some similar elements throughout every room that links them together despite every room having a different color and vibe. Go with what you like!

  • As long as they have something in common, like color, they should look fine.

They don't have to be the same pattern but having some color in common would make them look like you planned this and didn't go to walmart and buy something that stands out or looks out of place. Make it look intentional.

Different rooms can handle different patterns if you stick with the same basic color theme.
