I know how to clean it, but we always get it in the crevices of our bathroom. Is there a way to prevent it in the first place? Thank you!

The best strategy is to reduce moisture. Run your bathroom exhaust fan every time you take a shower, and let it run for 20-30 minutes afterward. And you'd be amazed how much moisture your shower walls can hold onto. Squeegee off the shower surround after you finish showering.

    Hi Cori,

Mold grows wherever you have dampness plus warmth. Dry and cool(ish) is the best way to prevent it. I believe the ideal humidity factor in a home is around 50-55%, and we've all heard 72 degrees is the perfect temperature for people to function in, but my family enjoys it a bit vooler at 68-70 degrees. Here is a link to help you with your mold cnocerns. I hope it helps! Thanks for coming to Hometalk for answers :)

    • My humidity is typically 20% or less (right now during summer less than 10% is typical), - 50% is too much for me coming from such a low humidity area I am drenched in sweat! 72° would be lovely, but I can't adfford to run (or have a unit that will not burn out) when it is 100° + every day! 68-70 would be ideal for me too - looking to move to make that a possibility.

Dehumidifier in the bathroom, wipe down walls of all water after shower.

You need to identify the source of the mold and take care of it. If mold is left to continue it can cause major health issues.

keep a squeegee in shower and wipe down the walls and shower door with it after each and every shower. Then I use a furniture polish such as Pledge and spray and wipe all the walls (tile) with it. Water will then bead up and not adhere to the shower surfaces as much.

do you have a fan in the bathroom? That can take out some of the steam and moisture in the air.

Increase Ventilation...........Wipe down Shower and Bath after use and leave dry......

  • Better ventillation! I have a window in my shower and a fan, I use both. By the time I am ready to leave the house, I turn the fan off and close the window, but leave cracked open an inch or so.

When you buy caulk for the shower and bathroom, be sure the label says it has a mildewcide added to it on the front of the tube.

When you buy paint make sure it has a mildewcide in it, or buy an additive to add to your paint.

Ditto on running overhead fan long enough, ditto on shower wiper. I keep a bottle of 10% bleach solution in the shower, and first sign, I give it a squirt. Mold grows roots into your stuff, don't let it go for even a day, it will be harder to remove. If its really bad, dig out old grout and regrout.
