Why does my Vine Bougainvillea only grows on short days..

Here in the NYC area, i have exposed my pot plant to 6 hours of sun daily and no flowers and no growth of a vine....and yet, like last year, when i brought it in because of Fall, that is when it started to bloom and showed growth of a vine. I see that they grow like crazy down south and they have the same day length that we get in the North.

First question how old is it?Second question have you re-potted it or given it any fertilizer during the summer growing season?Third you cannot compare southern growing conditions to northern indoor conditions. What happened to the vine prior it to bringing it inside?

yes, to all your questions..fertilized, re-potted it, over 6 hours of sun. I know the differences of the zones, that is why in my OP, i mentioned NYC and the short days. I brought in the vine with still some bracts in color because Fall was approaching and for what it did not do during the summer, it started to grow continously in a south exposure window. ..but i was hoping to get all that during the summer and outdoors.

It's possible that you just don't have the right zone for successfully growing bougainvilleas outside. They grow like wildfire here in my zone 9A California garden. We have low humidity, moderate hot summer, and rain only in the winter, though I do water them in summer mine that are established don't require a lot of water and we have little freezing in the winter.

Hello Korvette, It might not be a problem with the plant. You might have a problem with the soil. I recommend dissolving a teaspoon of Epson Salt in a gallon of water and sprinkling it on the base of the plant where it meets the soil. This will put enzymes in the soil and give your plant it's best chance. You can repeat this every couple weeks. Best of luck to you.

I'm aware of different Zones, that is why I mentioned NYC. I bought 2 plants last August, so for me, thats new. They were both in full bloom then, but of course, they came from California. In a couple of weeks as Fall was approaching, the blooms eventually stopped and I had to bring them indoors in a south window exposure. There they started to bloom again and the one that is a vine, started to show that growth. I nipped it off, cause i wanted a bushier plant...anyhow this continued till Novemeber and nothing after that. That is why I thought these are considered short day plants, like the christmas cactus and etc. i read about the epsom salt theory, but wondering if its too late to try it out now, when Fall appears in a month from now.
