We put in French drains to drain water away from our home. Dig a hole a foot deep with the end running away from the house being a little deeper/lower than where it starts next to the house. Put in gravel and lay in the drain, cover with more gravel, then back fill the dirt. Our end of the French drain was down hill and we left it draining out on top the ground to water the apple trees on our side yard. For more details talk to your local hardware store where they sell French drains. The older folks esp. are helpful and knowledgeable at such things. They love to share and help

French drains need specific information pertaining the actual property. French drains are not one fits all. So I would suggest you contact a professional.
