Fall might be a good time for you to plant your grass seed. Get a good quality seed and one that is designed for your area. Since your yard is small (I'm assuming you live in a park setting) you won't need to spend too much. Then, cover the seed lightly with straw. Please! Straw and not hay. You'll get yourself a double dose of weeds out of hay. Water it often and a good high nitrogen fertilizer will make those seeds jump out of the ground. Watering in this instance is very, very important. Without it, the nitrogen can be too strong. If you can, get a tool you roll along that looks like spikes on a wheel, it might help in preparing little holes for the tiny seeds to fall into.

Thank you Lynn. Straw will keep the bird from eating the seeds too. Think that is what happened last year. Do I have to buy a whole bale?

Or you can go to Lowe's or Home Depot or a nursery and buy turf ready to go rolled up. Buy just the amount you need. They can tell you about watering, etc.

  • You need to prepare the area first. Here is a link to help you get started! 😎

It depends on how large the area is you are trying to cover. Is saying, "Cover it 'til it looks right" too vague? LOL!! I' m not sure you can purchase 1/2 a bale and straw is more expensive than hay but well worth it. How about taking a rake with really big stiff tines and scratching the surface as best you can? When the soil is moist (not sloppy) drag it behind you back and forth across your yard. Then plant asap. Those little grooves give something for the seed to fall into and it will probably still be moist. Then, toss the straw. Surely after that prep you'll be seeing some nice green grass before winter sets in.
