Concrete Block garden

As a 76 year old single woman I thought that a concrete block garden just might be the thing for me. I miss not having a garden and tried having one this year but with all of the rain it did not work. Not to the point, I was wondering how large do each of you think I should make the "garden"? I know, that would depend on how much "garden" I would want right? Lay me out a pattern, please. I feel like this is one of those stupid questions but remember what my professor said, if you do not know the answer no question is stupid. Thanks

When doing any type of raised bed gardens such as cement block harder, always make sure you can reach across for weeding or harvesting. I prefer a long but skinny one vs a big square. You don't want to have to step into it to get to the center. But a U shipped one works good too. . It really depends on the space you have.

  • Here are a bunch of links for you! Now, some people say not to grow vegetables in these, some say to line with plastic, everyone has an opinion. I have made several of these over the years, so you decide for yourself. If you want other options just holler or Google!

I am currently putting one in too!! Mine is a long thin rectangle so that I can reach every thing like Vicky described.

The other important factor is height. I am making mine 3 feet high so I can sit on the edge if needed and I won't have to bend too far.

My husband plumbed a line into one end of my bed so a drip irrigation system can be installed. I live in the desert so watering is mainly done by me.

Its also important for the block to be sitting on a cement footer with rebar so that it lasts and doesn't start falling over.

I am excited for you to get back to gardening! It's a beautiful way to spend your time!
