depends on the variety of grass - some, like RYE, is considered an 'annual', could be too much/too little water, sun, shade, fertilizer etc. Get a soil sample done by your state agriculture dept -- https://ask.extension.org

Has it been hot and dry by you? Then you would probably need to water. Most lawns will recover quite nicely when they get good soakings of about 2" of water a week. Hold off fertilizing until it bounces back as fertilizer can burn your lawn. And try to water in the mornings when it has time to soak into the ground before evaporating off. If you water at night it promotes fungus.

rake out the brown grass. The water 3x a day if hot. 2x for sure, never water the hots part of the day.the water will be Boiling to which is not eh you want. When it's cool morning and then at late night. Throw in some grass seed to fill it out again. It take time to bring it back. If to far gone it wouldn't come back. Water with a sprinlker at least 20 minutes day and night.
