I think that's what you call the sort of plastic coated cabinets builders like to use. Mine are white but I would like to have darker, wood tone. Thoughts?

Chalk paint is a fantastic solution to painting non~wood (and wood) surfaces with way less prep time than you would normally need for a latex or oil! There are some great tutorials on google and there are also tutorials from companies like Rustoleum that make kits just for laminate countertops and the coated cabinets! The kits are pricier than mastore bought cgalk paint, and even less expensive is making your own!! VERY easy to do and again, "how-to's" can be googled to make your own! Chalk paint very durable, quick application and you get great results! Good Luck to you, I've done multiple large scale chalk applications and been very happy with results!

Check out the website for General Finishes. There are lots of videos and ideas and they sell gel stain, chalk paint and milk paint. You can also cover your cabinets with a product by Klean Strip Liquid Sander/Deglosser, then paint with regular paint. No sanding involved. Good luck with your project!
