  • Sure the turning think helps cook some dishes more even then simply keeping it in one place.

I've never had a plastic insert. Everything sits on the glass.

I am talking about the plastic wheel thing that is UNDER the glass? that turns the glass.
  • Was there one to begin with? Some have them some do not. Most kitchen and bath stores carry microwave plates with built in turners. You use them instead of the glass plate that comes with the micro or place it on top.

yes, I just want to know do I NEED it or can I use the mic without it?
  • no you do not. It just helps micro more even. If your cooking something larger, you may need to turn it partway through so it cooks even. :)

I would use it if you still had it. @Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com is correct about cooking evenly. I have seen items like popcorn not cook very well without the rotating device. It really depends on what you are cooking.
  • they sell the round "thingy" in ALL kitchen gadget stores. Under $10

I got my first microwave back in the 70s and it was almost as big as the oven...and it did not have a turning ring or a tray! Those things are just convenience items!

@Bernice H You would just need to keep turning your food often so it would cook evenly.
  • In 2005 we bought a house that was built in 1992. It has an over-the-stove microwave, which is original to the house. It not only does not have a turn table, it doesn't even have a glass tray in the bottom. My guess is that the former owners broke it at some point. I had used it for several years before I even noticed that there should be a tray. BUT. . . it works fine! I keep hoping it will die so I can get a new one, but I won't spend money for something I do not need.

Cheap at the thrift store here. I think the turntable helps cook evenly.

Mine does not work without the middle plastic Y-shaped plug which turns the glass. It does work without the bigger plastic ring on wheels. I found a new glass turntable at a thrift store, and they had some plastic rings.

I would think using it without the under carriage wheel would quickly strip the gears that make it turn. It would be added stress.
