Butcher Block?

I see so many great projects using old dressers for kitchen islands and would love to make one this summer. Where do you purchase the butcher block from? I have not seen them at Lowes or Home Depot. Thanks!

Ikea sells butcher block slabs, and so does Lumber Liquidators.

You can get them at Ikea or check with some local counter-top companies that might have them in different thicknesses.

Thanks! We make a trip out to the Ikea by us a few times a year. I think I need to schedule one soon!

Sears sells a Craftsman "work surface", intended for work benches in bamboo or rubberwood butcher block, in 6 and 8-ft. lengths [can be cut], reg. $130 - $160. It's 1.5" thick x 24" deep. I bought 3 of them for my small kitchen, cut one in thirds and used it as the backsplash to shim out the countertop pieces to 25.5".

I was going to say Ikea too. I made over a round butchers block and used a round bamboo lazy susan for the top (just removed the spinning base) it was much cheaper than buying something and cutting it down to fit (the size was perfect fit). See attached photo. I bought the lazy susan on line from Victoria's Basement.

Yes, you need to seal them. REMEMBER: Do not use the counter as a cutting board. AND get a nice small wooden cutting board to keep on the island to use for setting down hot things so it won't get scorched! Believe me it will be used. Then use plastic for cutting boards because they are not porous! I LOVE my butcher block. I just wipe it with a wet cloth and clean it with Clorox Kitchen Spray just to make sure it does not hold germs! I have been doing this for 3 years and it is like new!
