I LOVE A GOOD FIND.......Like treasures by the SEA !! .....these cute side tables were a bargain, and they immediately spoke to me !!
Table prep was rather easy for this project. I thoroughly sanded the existing finish off the wood top, and cleaned the base well with soap and water to remove any dust and dirt. Although I couldn't wait to get started with the redesign I had in mind, the table seemed to look and feel better already.

I grabbed my FAVORITE art medium, UNICORN SPiT, ....3 colors to take us to the beach ! BLUE THUNDER, ZIA TEAL AND WHITE NING !
Anitbacterial wipes, like in this pic, are a SPiT blenders best friend ! If I had to choose one "tool of the trade" when working with Unicorn SPiT, it would be my Home Depot brand wipes ! They do not contain bleach, leave lint, and are just moistened enough to dilute the SPiT while you work, making it MOVE across your piece easily and effectively.
3 colors !!! that's all you need to create a beautiful beach scene. I will show you all a few options, but this can be achieved with our 3 colors of SPiT. using the wipes and your own hands {so fun ! }, apply the darkest color first, which is our Blue Thunder across the middle to represent your water. Zia Teal across the top for our Caribbean blue sky, and some White Ning at the bottom, ah, the sandy white beach ! The application is so easy and fun, follow your grain with your wipe and a little SPiT, full strength.
I did get a little crazy here, it's an option, not a necessity. I wanted my colors a little more vibrant, and maybe I was thinking less shabby white, and more happy coastal. I mixed up a bit of gold mica dust in some sealer, and ran a bit over our beach{ yes, that's another antibacterial wipe ! }
Now, the cool part. I mixed equal parts Blue Thunder, Zia Teal and White Ning in a small separate container to create this amazing oceanic blue to use for some detail and depth.
I took the mixed color and blended carefully between the ocean and sandy shore to create the illusion of surf, where the waters always appear a bit lighter.
Some may know, but let's be sure to add this ....when working with Unicorn SPiT, your projects need to be sealed with an oil based sealer to prevent the SPiT from reactivating {water based/water based} and smearing your wonderful work ! My go-to for most projects is Helmsman SPAR polyurethane, GLOSS ! ..I recommend 2-4 coats, with a light sanding in between ! {220 grit works best}
As much as I would LOVE to have a workshop FILLED with every paint and product in the world {a girl can dream, right ?} I usually mix up my own chalky paint. I chose a very complimentary pale blue for you edges as well as our base.
Now, I really could have and probably should have simply spray painted this metal base...easy peasy, right ?....Yeah, I didn't do that ! I wasn't sure what look I was going for until I was all in and hands on with my chalk paint.....a little heavier than a dry brush, but full coverage not required ! ....
Oh, don't put your wipes away just yet !!! .....use them to "wet distress " .....they easily slide between the intricate curves of your base....a little back and forth action, and you have a distressed look that still compliments your coastal scene !
and there she is...BY THE SEA, BY THE SEA, BY THE BEAUTIFUL SEA.......or, by your couch or favorite chair !! Shabby chic is great, but fabby coastal is so in !!!

Did the poly discolor (yellowish) the paint? I used it on several projects and got the discoloration. Any suggestions?
