I paid a company 1500 to install sod in my back yard in May 2016. The sod died in late September early October 2016. Tried to reach out to the company and they never responded. What do I do now? I have a dirt backyard with a patch of grass (which was the same patch I started with before sod installation. I do have a big dog and the company knew this and we kept the dog off of it for 30 days. I put indoor/outdoor carpet down for the dog but would love grass just can't afford sod again

Call the better business in your area to see if they have other complaints about the company.

This is a business matter that can be brought to small claims court in the city, town or village where the work was done. The limits for recovery usually are $4000 maximum. It is unreasonable to lose your entire lawn within 5 months and the courts will no doubt rule in your favor and make the company reimburse you. If they fail to show up in court, most judges rule in your favor. The court will have more info and it is usually (depending on the location) less than $15 to file a claim. Call Town/City/Village Court and find out the specifics. Collect all evidence of documents, receipts, verbal agreements (or witnesses to verbal agreements), etc. Good luck!

Check your paperwork-most sod places have a guarantee. If you do contact the area better business bureau-or file a small claims suit.

If you watered it as instructed and it died, take them to Small Claims court.

Do you have proof of your communications with the sod company. Do you have photos along the way, before, during after? Did you follow the company directions; do you have that information in writing? If you did everything as directed, and have proof that you tried to remedy this situation, you should file a complaint with the BBB. They should immediately contact the company with your complaint and you should get some type of action, up to and including payment. If you aren't happy with that result, you may need to file with the Small Claims Court. Is the sod company a member of a sod federation? If so, file a complaint with them, too. BTW, why have you waited almost 1 year after? They will ask that!

  • You have a bunch of great suggestions here on how to deal with the former vendor, I would go after them in Small Claims Court - info on how to file and the process is easily available on line. In the meantime you can get started on a low cost option to start a lawn from scratch. Chances are they did not lay the sod properly which is why it perished. Hope these links help you out, you still have time! Good luck!
