Can anyone help me with step by step process of restoring old crates?

I recently found two old boxes - one a milk crate and the other a wooden box with a lid on it. The box looks like it carried bottles in it. It has indented, closed carrying grips that appear to be tin. I want them to become side tables, but I haven't a clue how to begin. Help!

I would not stain them. I would retain their characpterodactyl and add a wood sealer.
