  • I would paint them! Paint can transform them from blah to fab. It does not matter what the cabinets are made of because you can paint anything if you use the right primer, paint, and brush/rollers. you must clean the surfaces really well and take off the doors and hardware and clean because if you do not, then the paint will not stick. You can also update your hardware with spray paint. I painted my kitchen for less than $30 with mistint paint turned chalk paint and a can of hammered spray paint on handles a neighbor was throwing out! check out my kitchen on here to see. If you can, I now see that I will use store bought chalk paint in the future and do my cabinets in 2 tone with dark grey on bottom and lighter gray on top but budget and the deals I found made most of my choices for me. do not worry about painting the inside. just cover shelves with nice contact or shelf paper. Good luck and if you want tons of advice, post pics

If the wood is in good condition the best way give them a new look is modern updated cabinet knobs and hindges. Also clean the outside of the cabinet then apply a wood restorerr which will bring out the beauty of the original wood. Years and years of cooking and grease can leave a built up. Painting beautiful wood should be a last resort because you can't undo it.
