Citrus and vinegar have a tendency to eliminate odors very well. My family borrowed a vehicle from a smoking friend last summer, the smell was very strong. I sprayed white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water on the carpet and seats, wiped the seats down, then sprayed an orange/lemon essential oil mix on the carpet. I also bought some citrus vent plugs and it smelled wonderful for the entire trip. It smelled so good they stopped smoking in their vehicle to keep it fresh!(just a note....open windows to air out vehicle after the vinegar!)

Have a professional detail it. Leave the windows open as much as possible. It took years to clear the smoke smell out of my in-laws home.

Take it to a place like Serv-Pro that do fire restoration. That may sound extreme but you probably will never get the odor out yourself.

Febreeze air freshener works very well in my car. Also, you can use Febreeze fabric freshener on any fabric or carpet surfaces to add a little extra "power" to the process.

vinegar in a spray bottle helps if you spray it around inside the car

  • Clean every surface including the the carpet and fabric upholstery where odors get trapped. Get some of the Fabreze vent clips, keep a bottle of Fabreeze in the car. If you car is garaged at night leave the windows down halfway to air it out overnight every night.

All surfaces need to be cleaned. Vinegar works well, as it will get the tarry residue off the firmer surfaces. Clean the carpet and upholstery and finish off with a vinegar spray that wet the surfaces. I wouldn't advise you to do this if you plan on driving right away. The vinegar smell will disappear as soon as it dries. Open the windows and even the doors and leave it out in the sun until it dries. I have use Armor All Multi Purpose spray to clean vinyl and carpet in cars with excellent results and doesn't change the color or leave sticky residue. It can be hard to find, but a number of car parts stores and menards carry it. Make sure it is the multi purpose, not the other Armor All Products.

You need to use a fumigating bomb they sell for about $10 in auto supply WalMart. It cleans into the filters and into and under everything. Works 100% perfect. Follow directions.
