Replace carpet & ceramic tile with wood floors

My house has oak stained trim (doorways, windows, and baseboards). We would like to replace the carpeting in the living room and the ceramic tile in the dining area and front entry way. What color of stained wood floor would look best? We thought about installing gray wood stain floor. Or should we install dark wood (which will show every speck of dirt) or try to match the color of the wood trim?

Personally I would match the color of the trim.

Good Afternoon Sabina :) The following link begins with this opening paragraph: "When you purchase hardwood flooring, you may additionally be interested in knowing if there is matching molding for the baseboard available, or if it's a bad idea to have baseboard that matches. In general, matching baseboard is not the best idea, but there are some instances in which you may find it to be an appealing option, so knowing what the visual effects of painted or stained baseboards are can help you decide what is best for you. ..." http://living.thebump.com/should-hardwood-floors-match-hardwood-baseboard-color-9148.html

Below is a link that shows tons of pics with harwood floors and trims, some that match and some that don't ... give it a peruse and see if there is something that really strikes your fancy ;)

I hope these have been of some help. Thanks for using Hometalk for thoughts

Hi...I have read all of the previous very helpful info that everyone has kindly sent you about your hardwood floors and base molding ....I think that before you decide on a color for your new floors you need to look at your wood furniture colors on all your pieces in these rooms...if this area to be covered is a smooth open flow from room to room, you should aim for a cohesive look to bring these rooms together and not treat them like they are separate spaces. If your basic furniture colors are an oak, or similar warm brown, then you would not want to go with gray wood floors....I would ask the floor people to bring lots of samples to your home so you could do the matching right there and choose what is going to complement your furniture. Also are your walls a neutral in these areas or are they separate different colors? Again that would need to be unified with a similar color on all those walls..then there is the baseboards and shoe molding that must go on to finish those beautiful floors! I have hardwood on my whole first level and all of our trim is white, doors, windows, trim around the fireplace etc. Our walls are neutral taupe throughout the whole lower level to unify the space and our baseboards and shoe molding are white as well...white pops out beautifully on the trims and all moldings and gives a clean crisp line between the walls and the oak floors...just needed to explain to try to give you a visual idea of how to bring a space together...this will be a big and expensive job but you want to do it right for yourselves now and in the future when it is time to sell your home....best of luck and have fun redecorating!!
