Does a backsplash need to meet the counter on it's face?

We are updating our kitchen and installed a counter with a small backsplash. DH intends to add a glass backsplash on top ot the wall lip to the bottom of the cupboards but I have never seen it done anywhere.
Would it work out alright or Is there a valid reason I can give him not to do this?

It goes flush to the new counter top that comes up in the back, lip etc then extends upwards to under the cabinets.

No, the tile backsplash doesn't need to meet the counter at face level--meeting that short counter backsplash would work fine.

I'm impressed you have a husband who offers to do home improvement projects for you! I think glass tile would look fabulous there, and would protect your wall from heat and spatters.

That is exactly how my kitchen is. My counter has a lip on it that goes up the wall about 4 inches, then my backsplash starts and goes all the way up to the bottom of the cupboards. It looks great. And is the norm in many updated kitchens.
I think it'll look fine! Just make sure he seals inbetween so moisture doesn't get between the 2 surfaces.

The lip as you call it is a counter backsplash. Some people choose to do both, since the counter backsplash is often seamless. As others have said, you can add a backsplash from the counter backsplash up, or remove it if it is separate. It's entirely your choice. I have 2 laminate counters: one has tile above the counter backsplash, and one doesn't, because I wanted a different look. I did flood the one with out the counter backsplash last weekend, and some water ran down the wall, because I hadn't not caulked it yet.
It will look awesome , go for it!
If you want to do without added back splash, just be sure to paint with high gloss for easy cleaning. That is what I have. If you later want to add the back, just apply it over the paint.
