I did mine using a good latex primer (Zinsser), craft paints in the colors I wanted and at least three coats of Polycrylic. Don't use polyurethane as it will yellow. I started by cleaning the Formica really well and then lightly sanded using a random orbital sander. Clean all the dust and then roll on a coat of the primer. I used white since I was planning on having some white in my faux granite look. Let that dry overnight and then I used three colors of the craft paints and applied them with a crumpled plastic grocery bags. Keep going with the three colors until you achieve a look that you are happy with. If you don't like it at some point, just wipe it off with a wet cloth and start over. When finished, I let that dry overnight and then started applying the Polycrylic with a good paint brush. Let dry at least 2 hours before lightly sanding with a fine sanding sponge, wiping off any dust and then apply the next coat. Repeat at least once more. Let dry overnight before replacing any items on the counter. The real key I think is allowing plenty of cure time before placing anything heavy like a microwave on your counter. Also be careful about dragging things across the countertop as that will scratch the finish. Also never set hot pans on the counter or cut or dice without a cutting board.

If you want a color other than white in your finish, just take one of your colors and tint enough of the primer. Just make sure to tint plenty of the primer, because you won't have a formula to do another batch!

This is very inexpensive compared to any of the kits or to replacing the countertops. I love how mine look.
