Hello Nancy, From what I understand it is oil base stain, but there are opinions favoring water base too. I like THIS article about your question so much that I sent it to my sister (who has NEVER treated her back porch wood deck of 25 years ! She says she likes the "natural" look. Maybe I can get to to like the naturally CLEANED look with a clear coating to protect the wood before it begins rotting.
