DIY Fabric Pumpkins

Each month I participate in a crafty de-stash challenge on Facebook along with some other bloggers. This month I decided to use up some of my fabric scraps and make some fabric pumpkins.
Here are my fabric choices for this project. I am trying to ease into fall a bit by choosing patterns that aren't typical fall designs. One of these is a drop cloth and the others were for throw pillows in my home.
Start by cutting rectangles of fabric. The width needs to be 2x the height. I made threes different sizes so mine were 24 x 12, 18 x 9 and 12 x 6.
Fold the rectangle in half with right sides together and stitch the edge with a sewing machine, or by hand if you don't have a machine.
Add a running stitch along the bottom edge and gather it together. Then tie a knot to hold the gathers in place.
Turn it right side out and stuff it with some poly fill. Don't over stuff. Then add another running stitch across the top edge and gather it together. Add some stitches to hold the top together then tie a couple of knots.
Use twine to create the detail around the pumpkin. Tie one piece all of the way around and knot it a couple of times at the top. Then tie another piece. You end up doing this 4 times until the twine pieces are the way around the pumpkin. All of the pieces are tied at the top.

Then take a long needle and thread and starting from the top poke it straight down into the top and pull it through to the bottom. Do this about 3 times and pull it to flatten the shape into more of a pumpkin shape rather than a round ball shape.

You can pull the tops of the gathered fabric toward the top and the bottom to smooth the fabric out on the sides a bit.

Then place a "pile" of hot glue into the top and place your stem down. I held it for a couple of seconds until it stood up on its own. I used a real piece of branch from my yard to create the stems.
What do you think?
They are perfect with the Dollar Store Cake Stands I made too! I love them.

I made a Facebook Live video showing how to make one if you would like to see it. I invite you to like my Facebook Page too.

Happy crafting!
Michelle
