Is it possible to shorten a spring rod and still maintain the spring?

I've just move and would like to reuse a few of my spring rods. Is it possible to shorter the rod and still have it spring adjustable? Thank you.

It probably will work as long as the pieces can still fit nicely into one another. You want to make sure to make even cuts.

Shorten them at the ends only. Therefore the springs are left alone .
