Can you restain oak to look like either maple w/o too much grain

I have a beautiful stone fireplace which matches the stone outside. Unfortunately, it is bordered on each side with a bookcase an d then library paneling--in OAK, which I detest. Any ideas. I'm afraid white would look too stark.

I thought about somehow putting some green on it, as I will carry some of this it into the kitchen, and there is a granite with green that I love! What is liming?

Liming is similar to whitewash. The grain of the oak will show. If you really dislike the oak grain, you may want to paint it, instead. There are some gel stains that will let you go much darker and it will be less obvious. Strip it, sand it and paint it with the shade of green you like. There are gel stains that come in colors also. I'm sure the oak has a sealer (and possibly wax) on it, so for the best results do some good prep work that includes cleaning with a TSP type product, strip and sand.

Strip it and re-stain it, but it will always look like Oak or Paint it......

Personally I would pull a color out of your fire place to paint or stain the bookcase
