How to Seal Chipping Paint

Do you love a good flea market? I really do, there is nothing better than finding original pieces for my home. I scored big time a few months ago when I found this vintage mantel at a local flea market.
Here is a pic I took of it at the market. See it there in the background? I was trying to be discreet, as to not alert the other shoppers of this amazing find! I negotiated with the seller and brought this home for only $90!
What I loved most was the chipping paint. You cannot duplicate this type of patina. I decided to seal this paint so it wouldn't chip any further, it was perfect as is. I did first use a lead testing kit to be sure it was safe. After doing some research on sealers, I went with Fusion clear tough coat wipe on poly. I wanted a product with no yellowing, and this worked. It was super simple to apply, you wipe the product on with a lint free cloth. Let dry and repeat.
You will have some additional chipping during the process. For the third and last coat, I used a paint brush to really get into the nooks and crannys of the mantel.
It's that easy! Stop by the blog to see how we built a custom fireplace surround for this vintage mantel!
