Help! What do I do with the side of my bath tub?

My bath tub currently has carpet going up the side of it. I am changing the flooring and can't decide what to do with the side of the tub area. I could put wood and paint it the color of the tub? Or I could paint the wood and put 4 small squares of the flooring in like a picture frame type way? Just put it all the way up with the flooring? I have oak cabinets, I could make a frame around the squares with oak trim? Help me decide what would look best PLEASE!
This is the way it looks now. Square covering entry to water pipes doesn't show up as much as it looks in this picture though.
This is the flooring and shows the wall covering.

I like the flooring. I would just go ahead and use the flooring for the side of the tub also, unless you have some huge bathroom that would make it look like it was too much.

@Bobbi Precisely what I was going to suggest. I would suggest Marine Grade to resist the moisture and all that can come with it.
  • If you have to have access to the tub, then I would get (thin) stain grade plywood and cover the area and stain it to match your vanity.

Though I like the idea of using the same tile as the new flooring, it's gorgeous, I think using carpenter grade ply or even oak beadboard paneling trimmed with oak as you mentioned would be the easiest way to hide the access panel. I did a mock up for you using beadboard paneled cabinet doors. Which if you have a local Habitat Restore, you might be able to find doors to do the job with. Ours always has plenty of doors to chose from.

@Donna W you have no clue how much I appreciate your comment. Though I enjoy helping others, and don't do it for any praise, it's nice to be acknowledged. I fear if I took a meal to a sick neighbor, they might not get well as fast. Ha!

I think I would rip it off and put up bead board.

A nice tile or beadboard. The beadboard is classic, it's been around forever, but it always looks fresh.

If your looking to blend-in on a budget. you can order (some box stores carry in stock) oak cabinet sheeting (or 1/4" luan) for the cabinet backs when installing a 2 cabinet island. You could cut & attach to the side of the tub, and trim with corner trim, shoe mold and other nice finish trim, stained to match your other cabinets. can be done for under $100
  • Tile, tile, tile. Always tile in a bath. They make tile access doors

I used three square embossed tin sheets across the front of mine. Each was framed. Mine were bronzed as that was what went with my bathroom. But, you can get plain ones and spray them to match your bathroom.

This is a perfect place for weathered stone. It is a wallcovering type product. go to www.weathered-stone.com or www.LilliansInteriors.com Perfect. I will send a pic if I can figure how.

weathered stone is a bendable product. It is installed with wallpaper adhesive and can be cut into any size and shape you need, Then get this! You grout it. Wonderful product!

@Loretta We used wood, then painted it a green blue - cut a wooden fish in half and glued it to the side, then found a bunch more little fish and glued them in groups. Finally, we used wooden plugs to make 'bubbles' going up from the fish. Sounds garish but really very cute and low key.

That looks really lovely Loretta! I just happened upon this post as I was also wondering what to do in our guest bathroom We bought a spa tub and are taking out our cast iron claw foot tub and I will need to have this tub built into a drop in structure and am wondering what to front it with ( I have round log walls for the 3 sides but need a front idea).. Your design is really lovely! Nice work!

what in god's name makes people put carpeting in a bath?! I love the idea of the vinyl bead board. It's classic, easy to apply and cheap! What's not to like?
