I would not attempt this project, for there are numerous safety issues. Many children have been caught in the rungs, side of the mattress, arms, legs, you name it. It's great when their newborns. When they begin to roll over, that's when the safety issues start. It's nice to have a homemade crib, but as I said it's iffy. Best to you and yours, and your new baby. Good Luck!
