I am not sure your location but I love hostas and creeping phlox. It is such a pretty spring flower. I also plant some iris's, and tulip bulbs.
I fill my beds with Viola and Pansy in the fall after I've ripped out my summer annuals. Most of them bloom well into the winter and then burst into new growth in the spring! Give them some fertilizer when the weather warms and you'll be amazed at how spectacular they'll look.
Viola seem to be more hardy than the pansy. Once it gets too hot, I pull them out and plant my summer flowers. I live in zone 6, so I'm not sure how this would work where you live.
