I have been wanting to do "something" for a couple years but finally pulled the plug when my daughter in law JoAnna inspired me. I have painted many walls but this was a scary undertaking! Lighter and brighter I think, don't you? Hard work, scratch that...tedious work but I think I like it!

We want to help you DIY, so some of the materials in this post are linked to sellers. Just so you know, Hometalk may collect a small share of sales from the links on this page.
Small tight kitchen with darker oak cabinets.
I removed all the top cabinets and used sanding de-glosser.

Then used Zinsser spray primer on the doors and painted primer on the face frames.
After that I used white chalk paint, 3 coats. It went quickly because you can repaint in a few hours. The next day I distressed just the edges. Quick tip here...I used my leaf blower to remove any sanding residue. Then I used 2 coats of Minwax water based polycrylic satin finish on top.
I think that was just enough distressing!
After, I started on the lowers I did all the same steps again except the paint. I painting the bottom with a latex grey. You should know that there is SOOO many colors of grey that I goofed up and put 2 coats of grey on the frames before I realized I didn't like the color I chose first. Then I wised up and brought home samples to paint on then chose another grey. Live and learn!
I think I will do the window frames white also and I left my bar/work station oak. The bar I brought from my old house and it is movable and unique....and old! When I bought the house 3 years ago I did put granite counters in and added it to the bar also.
Who had an actual bar in their kitchen? I do!!
For now I will keep the bar oak.

I reaaaaly want to try this on my kitchen cabinets (so gross) but, forgive what might be a foolish question, what is 'sanding de-glosser'? Is it a stripping agent or a tool?

I think putting marble on the bar is a mistake. Different eras completely. Was the wood top so horrid it couldn't be restored?
