How do you fix the back of a appliqued afghan to look finished?

Hi Granny2179. I've been researching this and from what I've read, hiding the back stitches is usually done when applying the applique. Depending on how large it is, you could cover the back with coordinating fabric, but then you'll lose some of the movement of the afghan. One of the articles I read suggested putting felt over the stiches in an appropriate shape and sewing it carefully so that the stiches don't show on the front. When my grandmother made me an afghan, she specifically stated that there was a front and a back (no appliques, just regular stitches). Maybe that's just the way to go with it. Handmade items are not always 'perfect' that is part of their charm.

We always used a pretty flat sheet as the backing. Generally something that coordinates with the theme on the front. Or just go solid color, options are limitless! ☺

When I stitch anything where the back will show, I take the needle and work it either through the fabric then cut off.... or weave the thread through the stitches at the back and then cut off. If you just want to put a cover on the back, make the fabric something stretchy and light weight.
