we put in cement decor type blocks (heavy like cement) to retain them from wandering all over the yard, then we mulched an oval area around them to give them room to spread out as large as we wanted. 4 small plants have filled in the space in 2 yrs and given us many quarts of raspberries!

    Garlic and Comfrey.

Garlic is good for pest control and yummy! Comfrey is a great nitrogen fixer! You can also chop the comfrey and let it lay for compost/mulch right at the base of your plants.

There is another plant called Tansey that is great for pest control but I would hesitate to use it around any fruit or vegetables that kids may be tempted to pick and eat only because some of the Tansy flower grabbed with the food from quick picking might get consumed and is toxic.
