That's beautiful, I love the stone.
Yes, you can paint the fake rocks.
You will want to clean it well, removing all loose particles and dust with a brush.
Using a spray bottle with water, you want to dampen the surface of your stone so that your primer isn't all sucked in.
While it's damp, lay primer on your stone with a big nap roller and a brush for crevices. It may take two coats of primer. (I think Zinser Bulls Eye would work best)
Then its time to paint!

Once you paint the rock, you will never be able to get the paint off. I'd never paint it. If you don't like it, place something near or on it to distract your eye.
If you want ugly you will get it. Don't know what the rest of the rooms looks like but I do know this will not be pretty when painted. Perhaps you can find a way to bring this stone look into your decor.
It looks like your best option is to spray it. WE purchased a sprayer at Menards for a very reasonable price. They have several sizes. We bought a larger one to do our deck.
I wouldn't undertake trying to paint it. But there are stains made especially for changing the color or bricks that might give you a more desirable color with less effort. Just query "stain for bricks".
Yes, I would seal it first and then use Masonry Paint. - many colours.
I painted mine with chalk paint. Once you do, you are stuck with it. I wish I never painted it. Yours looks nice.
that is a classic limestone look. it's one of the more neutral facades that you will find. don't paint. if you don't like it use a a fire resistant surround for it. ie fire proof panels that cover the limestone, but don't mar it.
