If you have a lot of shade in your yard it may contribute to the algae problem, to keep it from coming back maybe trim some trees so that the pool gets some more sun. There are also many algicide products on the market. I would suggest visiting your local pool supply store, not just a bog box home improvement. The people at pool stores really do know what they're talking about. The solution may also depend on whether you have an inground vs above ground and the type of lining that your ...»
pool has. Another good tip is to put your pool chemicals in at night so that they are not burning off during the day. Good luck!

Go to your pool supply store with a sample of the water - they will run it and let you know what chemicals needed to straighten out. They also have a stabilizer now that you put in your skimmer basket that will help maintain your chem levels and keep it from burning off during the sunny parts of day. Your probably gonna need to SHOCK the pool to rid of algea then maintain chem levels so it doesn't come back.

We had the same issue with our pool. It was the horrible mustard algae. Add enough acid to bring the pH below 6.0 and maintain that level for 24 hours. That will kill the algae. Brush and rinse your pool filters and run the filters constantly for 24 hours after the algae is dead. Your pool will look horrible after you loosen the dead algae and will be extremely cloudy. You may have to rinse your filters more than once during that 24 hour period to filter out all the tiny particles. ...»
Once you have done that, shock the pool and your water should clear. To keep the algae from growing, you may need to up the time your filtration is running each day. Run it during the hotest part of the day. Ours runs for almost 10 hours each day during the Summer because we are in the Las Vegas extreme heat. Once you clear it up, make sure you keep your chemicals balanced, and keep any new signs of growth brushed away. Algicides can work, but they are a terrible shade of purple and depending upon your pool surface, they can actually stain it, so be careful. Good luck...it's not a fun thing to deal with!

Forgot to mention that your shock should have a flocculant in it, so that it binds the tiny algae particles together and can more easily filter them out.
