This fun and fast project can be done with things that most people have lying around the house.

We want to help you DIY, so some of the materials in this post are linked to sellers. Just so you know, Hometalk may collect a small share of sales from the links on this page.

I used an old glass vase, alcohol paints, rubbing alcohol and sisal rope(not pictures). I chose autumn colors of red, yellow and brown. If you don't own these items and wanted to purchase all of them start at the dollar store for your rope and vase. The alcohol paints are around 8.00 but they last a long time. Rubbing alcohol is usually .99. so you are still only around 11.00 for this project.

I prepped the vase by cleaning it inside and out. After it dried I began to apply the alcohol paints.

You could achieve a water color affect with regular paints that are watered down. You won't need the rubbing alcohol with regular paints, but it might add a cool effect. May be worth the try.
I am doing sections since the alcohol dries very quickly. using a cotton ball, I saturate it with rubbing alcohol, coat the glass section and the I simply add drops of the paints and let them run together and down the glass. Alcohol paints are very easy to use and make some very interesting designs all on their own. You can get them at most hobby/craft stores.

I did this around the entire vase. I let it dry for 2 hours, even though these paints dried much faster than that. I just wanted to make sure.

After your paints are completely dry then you can move onto the last step...yep, just three steps for this project.

You are going to add your sisal rope.. You can use string or yarn even. I put one row around the bottom of the glass and then two rows around the neck.
I used a glue gun because I didn't have Gorilla glue (nor the patience to see my finished project).

You can see how the paints blend together and create a nice blended design. And if you make more than one, you will never get the same design twice. I love that!!
Here is my finished project. You can go all the way to the top but I wanted to leave that clear so when I add twigs and sparkly sticks, they will be visible going into the vase...(I need to go out and find my twigs and cover some of them in glitter)

This was fun, quick and easy. Best of all most of us have everything you will need to do this project right in your house.

Oh if you want a glossy finish, as opposed to the matte, you will need to get spray gloss. You will want to do that before you put on your sisal/string. It will add some drying time to your project. Be sure to use spray gloss in a well ventilated area.

Have fun.

Do you think this would work with nail polish? I have a bunch of colors I don't wear and they do dry quickly.

Do you use such a small amount of paint at a time that it doesn't drip all over your work area or settle around the bottom and the vase sticks to your paper or whatever your using for protection?

QUESTION...If you don’t like the look when you are finished, can you remove it and start again?

You can make your own alcohol ink. Use 99% alcohol and remove the insides of permanent marker. Cut up the inside of the marker and a small amount of alcohol, let the ink saturate the alcohol!
