Thermofoil generally cannot tolerate rapid sanding, so when performing this step, take care to be as gentle as possible
Here's the best process.... http://www.homepainterstoronto.com/painting-thermofoil-cabinet-doors/ Use Zinsser B-I-N shellac-based primer
I painted my 60+ year old bathroom vanity, even though many said it couldn't be done successfully. I think paints are so much better now that painting thermafoil is not much different than painting any other surface. I emptied the cabinet and removed the doors, sanded very lightly, washed thoroughly to make sure all the dust, oil and dirt were completely removed and let them dry overnight. Then, I painted them with one coat of good primer/sealer, and finally, painted with one coat of porch and patio paint from Behr. This was 25 years ago. Except for a couple of scratches from my giant cat jumping up on them, the finish is as flawless and unchipped as the day I painted it. I am thinking of repainting them, but only to change the color, (I think the cat scratch could be covered with a tiny bit of touch up paint)

Also chalkpaint should work!
If the thermofoil is peeling at all around the edges, it can all be peeled off and you can easily paint the MDF doors. Did this to my old re-purposed kitchen units when I redid the kitchen. They are in the laundry now. However, the term thermofoil doesn't mean the same thing every where. With my "thermofoil" this worked well. It's a layer of plastic type melamine product that is heat fused to an MDF base. Some thermofoils are a much thinner product that are heavily fused to the base.
I had this kind of cabinets but they were peelin. So I removed thermofoil (it's actually was very easy). i when send them out to spayed ( it gives a much more professional finish and was not expensive). It looks great!
