Hi Lorraine, If you live in a wood structure, there should be a stud every 16". If you measure from a corner you should find one. If you still can't find one, here's a link that shows you how to hang heavy things without studs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SSJaO3gVPE

    Good luck!

There are screw kits with anchors at your favorite hardware store just for that, inexpensive

  • As lonng as your shelves are not too heavy, or the items you plan to place on the shelves themseles, here is a link with options for you. Enjoy!

There are many anchors and sizes you can use, they are also called Mollie bolts. Depending on the weight of the weight of the shelf. Take measurements of the shelf, and a guess of its weight. Go to your local hardware, or Homedepot or Lowe's and someone will help you pick the right anchor. Let them know how many shelves you want to put on one wall. This is going into sheetrock. Good Luck!

Hi Lorraine, I personally have always used very skinny nails. I like the white paneling nails the best at 1 1/2" long. If you always pound the nail in at a 45 degree angle the "Wall" holds the weight and not the nail. People make the mistake of using too big of a nail, making too big of a hole and pounding it straight in, so naturally it will fall!! I have hung heavy shelves, heavy mirrors and pictures this way w/ NO problems. The shelf will of course have to have saw teeth or eyes or holes for the nails. If you hold the shelf upside down & flat against the wall you can mark where the nails need to go. A extra pair of hands are useful at this point if the shelf is large. You can use a level if you want but I have always been good at eyeballing. A level doesn't always work well if the home is older and walls are uneven anyway. You will have to judge how far to pound the nail in by what type of hooks are on the shelf. I would pound just a little at a time until you see that the shelf is resting on the wall snugly. You can tap either nail slightly up or down to adjust a slight crookedness. If it is way off start over in a higher or lower spot. People are so afraid of holes.... the ones made w/ the paneling nails are small & easily filled. If you are working with old plaster you will be pounding for a while but it will break through. (I've sometimes used a smaller nail to make a pilot hole first on very hard walls). New walls are a piece of cake :) Hope This Helps, Remember 45 degree angle so the wall hold the weight! That is the most important thing! Good Luck!
