If you are using it outdoors, you can use an outdoor paint. Or you can use chalkpaint or mineral fusion paint if you don't want to sand. Mineral Fusion Paint requires no sanding and is supposed to also be waterproof. If the iron needs done, you are best taping off the wooden part and spray painting the iron with a spray paint made for metal from Rustoleum.

Hi Lynn, I just did this! First, make sure your wood is sturdy. If you see any crack or rot, you will want to replace the wood. If the wood is good, just give it a light sanding, then wipe it down with a damp rag to get all the dust and dirt off. Use exterior paint. For the iron sides, if it needs it, sand it down and paint with a paint made for exterior metal!

    Hope this helps!

Hello Lynn, I agree with Suzette. Give the wooden slats a light sanding. Wipe down. Tape off the iron sides. Paint with exterior paint. Let dry. Pull tape off of sides. Next tape off area around the iron work. Paint iron parts (I would brush on instead of spraying on paint, to avoid paint getting on your slats). Hope this helps you. Good luck.
