Sounds like you have vine borers. They are a pain and will eat from the inside out of the stem. Google: squash vine borer control.

Could also be from a lack of calcium. Had this happen to ours, added calcium to the soil and next batch was perfect.
Calcium deficiency! I had the same problem. I crushed up some antacids (tums or rolaids) put them in a pitcher, mixed in a little hot water to dissolve, topped off pitcher with cold water and used it to water. Next day my little teeny ones had grown 6 inches! It's called blossom end rot, happens with tomatoes too
