Dog odors in dirt yard- help!

We have a very small back yard, which now that the kids are grown, only the dogs occupy. We have tried to grow grass in the past to no avail, so it is mostly dirt with a few patches of grass/weeds. Obviously the dogs need to relieve themselves outside, and although I pick up their "number 2's" on a daily basis, I can't do anything about their "number 1's". Our yard has a funky odor, not necessarily urine, but certainly not pleasant either. Any suggestions on a pet friendly "dirt deodorant" or another way to rid the yard of it's unpleasantness?

Hello Donna; I researched this for you. I found a wealth of information.

I posted the best links for you below.

I had this problem, when I moved into my new home which had no grass....

I cut up larger pieces of grass and kept working with it, so that I eventually had a yard. This was a huge help for me!!

I hope that these will be of help to you!!! Take Care!

  • Spray the yard with vinegar. Or at least hose the yard down daily. Even though growing grass or tending to the yard may not be your thing, making it pleasant for your dogs might be something to consider. There are lots of low to no maintenance ground cover plants - creeping thyme, sedum, would make the yard nicer for them and for you too! How about planting a small tree for some shade too. And less cleaning inside from the dogs tracking dust and dirt.

    • Absolutely! I have 6 dogs and 6 cats, so my house has to be pet safe too. Plus thyme smells so pretty when stepped on. One of my dogs likes to nap on the thyme in my yard. ☺ Everything in my yard is covered with some sort of ground cover, grass, tumbled pea gravel or mulch. It is hot and dusty here so I do everything I can to keep the dust and dirt to minimum as best as is humanly possible.

We have astro-turf in our small back yard, 3 large dogs and the best thing we found for odor is Simple Green. I buy it at Wal-Mart in the auto dept., put it in a sprayer on the garden hose and spray the whole area with it once a week or so. It permeates the astro-turf and drains down into the soil. We have done this for about 10 years and found no ill effects.

    • Janacow2, is astro-turf easy to clean the dogs "stuff" off of? Also, I would presume that Simple Green is safe for dogs if you have 3 and have been using it for years. Thank you for the suggestion!

Along with the other suggestions if you have enough sun, you could try growing aromatic plants like lavender, rosemary, jasmine and the like in large containers. The pots would save the plants from the dogs

You're welcome! At one time a neighbor next door had 7 dogs living in his small backyard and it really smelled next to our shared fence so in desperation I planted lavender, rosemary, and roses over there. It definitely helped and they were very lax cleaning up after their little poop machines

I have horses and keep their pens and stalls from smelling by using urine or order digesting solutions. I order mine through Spaulding Industries but you can find a good digester at any PetSmart or restaurant supplier. This solution can be sprayed on any stinky order or substance causing a smell.. This solution also works on my dogs when they get skunked, so you know it can really clean up you doggy oder.

I would train the dogs to use one area as their toliet, then you can have part of the yard that you can put down some turf.

Dog need more exercise so taking them to a local dog park, a walk on a nature area, run on the beach, and we trained all our dogs to run alongside a bike taking our waste bags with us.

Yes, very easy to clean, just hose it off. Since we have 3 large dogs (90 + lbs each), I "pilot" the yard 3-4 Times a day with a shovel and usually the piles slide right on the shovel when you go with the nap. Our astro turf is about 10 years old and is holding up well, we gave up on grass growing. Just check with your local government to be sure you can have astro turf in your area. We can't have it in the front yard, but it's ok in the back yard behind a 6' privacy fence.
