If you are wanting to keep the wood finish you could use a wood stain that's darker than the discoloration. I had a small wood table that had a nasty mildew stain , I sanded it well then applied a dark walnut stain by Minwax that had a sealer already in it. So far, so good and the mildew stain isn't at all visible
Good wood will do great with sanding. I've had beautiful results with a product that is a wood restorer. It's a stain that is easy to work with, in that it's rub on/in, rub off. It cleans, fixes up scratches and restores. Little odor. Especially if you can not move it. Quick fix until you can sand it out and stain. Good luck!
You could also use chalk paint, that way you won't have to sand or prime and you could just dive right in to painting. I can't wait to see how it comes out!! Keep us posted, best of luck :)
Restore-A-Finish by Howard. Home Depot, under $10 for 16 oz. It will last through many projects! =)
