Since your walls are painted a gray color, I would start looking for a rude that has a "Dusty" blue as the dominant background color; it does not need to be heavy in the foreground just in the background but heavy enough to be seen in the foreground so you can then look for colors in the foreground that compliment the blue and gray colors. Be sure you care a chip color with you rug shopping so you don't get the wrong blue color.

I would choose a basic color like light grey, beige, or variegated. This would keep the room modest and functional. These colors seem to "hide" the dirt tacked in better as well. Also, a dense, compact fiber is more durable. Add pops of color with pillows, wall hangings, etc. For example, you may find a colorful quilt or rug for hanging on a wall, then pick up some of your favorite colors from these. I would also suggest you get some rug or carpet samples 1st, bring them home, and see which ones you like the best to go on your floor. You can also ask the retailer about the durability and care.
