I love stain shading. I pulled this old table out of storage and decided I wanted to put owls on it. I did a dining table with a single owl and it sold quickly so I was hoping to sell this one quickly also. The table was $6.50 at the Goodwill on half off day. I sanded the top With 150grit then 220 grit. Just the top and edges. I cleaned the bottom and sanded any big knocks out of it. I drew my design on and began shading my owls. I painted the bottom with chalk paint in grey. Sealed the whole piece with wax. I really like how it turned out.

I really love this color grey. I make my own chalk paint.
1 cup of flat latex paint
1/3 cup of water
1 tablespoon of plaster of Paris.
I mix mine in an old blender.

And I think the owls are beautiful! I will have to share this with my daughter, as she has suddenly taken to loving owls! I would consider doing it myself also, as I love birds and have one of my own, (a conure, like a little mini parrot!) this has inspired me to make something fashioned after him! I love the way the owls are contrasting, and maybe I missed something in your explantation, But how did you get the contrast with the table?
