if you are going to make a design on the wall, blue or green painters tape. the green is less sticky than the blue. make sure the edges of the tape are stuck down, so paint won't be forced under it. both tapes work best on non heavily textured walls. the flatter the better actually. test your technique on a poster board....work out the kinks then do the walls.

When I do decorative painting I use blue painter's tape or Frog tape to paint striped walls, horizontal stripes, cross-hatch patterns.... Just about anything you can think off. If using blue tape, you can run a paintbrush with matte clear poly along the edge before painting to prevent bleed through.
