How can I camouflage 2 ugly iron sewer/water covers in my yard?

I have 2 ugly iron sewer/water covers in my yard. With about 12 inch bare dirt around each ( thanks to my husband). How can I camouflage and not plant more grass for him to kill... thinking starburst around it. Maybe stone/brick? Not sure...

I would turn the surrounding area into a flower bed. Add a couple stepping stones for water meter access. The flowers will quickly cover the water access and you can sweep them aside when needed.
Paint the covers in bright colors and plant a flower bed around them in a petal shape with the covers making the center of the flower
